The Bay Area is served by four charter-capable airports: San Francisco International (SFO) for heavy and long-range aircraft with full customs, Oakland International (OAK) and San Jose Mineta International (SJC) as less congested alternatives close to the East Bay and Silicon Valley, and Hayward Executive (HWD) as a dedicated reliever for fast, domestic-only turns. Charter flights from the Bay Area start around $9,500 for a light jet, and we recommend booking at least 24–48 hours out — longer during major tech conference weeks.
The Bay Area generates some of the densest private aviation demand in the country — venture capital, enterprise tech, biotech, and a concentration of corporate headquarters that run on tight, multi-city travel schedules. Executives moving between Silicon Valley, San Francisco’s Financial District, and the wider region routinely charter rather than fight commercial connections through a congested hub, and the region’s outbound demand to Lake Tahoe, Napa/Sonoma, and Southern California is heavy enough to support regular positioning flights.
SFO is the airport most people ask for by name, but it is not always the right answer. Its scale means longer taxi times, marine-layer ground stops in summer mornings, and landing fees that outpace the smaller fields. For domestic trips and South Bay meetings, Oakland, San Jose, or Hayward are usually faster gate-to-car and less exposed to SFO’s commercial-traffic sequencing. Our advisors position each trip on the airport that actually serves the itinerary — not just the one with the recognizable name.
| Airport | Drive to Bay Area Core | FBOs | Customs | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| San Francisco International (SFO) | 20–40 min to downtown SF | Signature Aviation (sole FBO) | Yes | Heavy and ultra-long-range aircraft, international arrivals; expect longer taxi and occasional summer fog delays. |
| Oakland International (OAK) | 25–45 min to downtown SF; 15–25 min to downtown Oakland | KaiserAir, Signature Aviation | Yes | East Bay meetings and travelers who want to skip SFO congestion; consistently fast turns. |
| San Jose Mineta International (SJC) | 45–70 min to downtown SF; 10–15 min to downtown San Jose | Signature Aviation, Atlantic Aviation | Yes | Direct Silicon Valley access — the right call when every meeting is South Bay. |
| Hayward Executive (HWD) | 35–55 min to downtown SF; 15–20 min to Oakland/East Bay | Signature Aviation | — | Domestic-only reliever with minimal congestion — the quickest gate-to-car option for regional day trips. |
Dreamforce and major tech conferences (September) — Moscone Center draws enterprise travel from across the country, and Bay Area airports see a sharp spike in inbound charter and repositioning traffic. FBO ramp space tightens at SFO and OAK; book as early as possible.
Summer marine layer season (June–September) — Morning fog routinely triggers ground stops and arrival delays at SFO. OAK and SJC are less affected and are the reliable fallback for early-morning departures during these months.
Tahoe ski season (December–March) — Weekend positioning flights from Bay Area airports to Truckee and Reno spike heavily on Thursdays and Sundays. Empty-leg availability on the return segment is common and worth asking about.
Wine Country harvest season (September–October) — Demand for short Bay Area–to–Napa/Sonoma hops rises alongside harvest events, adding pressure to HWD and OAK slot availability on weekends.
Earnings and IPO roadshow weeks (late January–February, late April, late October) — Corporate travel from Silicon Valley firms compresses charter availability on short notice; executives with recurring travel on these calendars should book standing lift ahead of the cycle.
Ground-transfer time in the Bay Area varies more by bridge traffic than by airport choice — the Bay Bridge, San Mateo Bridge, and Dumbarton Bridge all carry heavy commute-hour congestion that can add 20–30 minutes regardless of which field you land at, so align arrival timing with the destination side of the bay rather than the airport nearest San Francisco proper. Summer mornings bring marine-layer ceilings low enough to hold SFO arrivals; if the itinerary is time-sensitive, OAK or SJC avoid the exposure entirely. HWD has no customs facility, so it only works for domestic legs — international travelers with East Bay meetings should route through OAK instead. For same-day cross-bay transfers where bridge traffic is unpredictable, a helicopter shuttle between airports is sometimes the faster option and worth asking your advisor about.
